The Same Fate Awaits All Sins Chapter 60

Final Part – 01
The next evening, Gu Yanta went all out, preparing a table full of his best dishes. Even Lu Zheng had to admit that he truly had a talent for this.
"Why didn't you become a chef back then?" Lu Zheng reached out, picked up a braised prawn, and popped it into his mouth. "I feel like you'd definitely be happier doing this than your current job. You might even have been an executive chef at some five-star hotel by now!"
"Hey, hey, how am I supposed to plate it properly now that you've eaten one?!"
Gu Yanta rushed out of the kitchen, staring in frustration at the prawns that had originally been arranged in a perfect circle, now missing one, and helplessly started rearranging the plate.
"Who says I'm not happy now?" Gu Yanta said while adjusting the prawns. "I'm very happy! If I had become a chef, would I have ever met you?"
"Uh... well..." Lu Zheng chewed while speaking expressionlessly, "If we were destined to meet, we would have met anyway! Maybe one day, I'd have eaten your food, thought it was amazing, and wanted to get to know you?"
"And then?"
"And then we'd have fallen in love at first sight all over again!"
"Haha! I can hardly imagine you falling in love at first sight with me in a chef's uniform and hat!"
"So what?" Lu Zheng said nonchalantly. "You'd look handsome in anything!"
"Lu Xiaozheng, your sweet-talking is getting better and better. I feel like there's a bit of a gap between us now..." Gu Yanta said this, but inside, he was secretly delighted. "Be honest, this isn't just the family bias talking, is it?"
"Uh... it is..." Lu Zheng grinned and ran off as soon as he finished speaking.
Ding-dong. The doorbell rang. Lu Zheng opened the door, and the Lu family father and son had arrived as promised.
Father Lu was tall and sharply defined, bearing a strong resemblance to Uncle Lu. He had an innate air of authority. It was clear that the refined, handsome features of the Lu brothers had all come from their mother.
The three Lu family men were not talkative, and after they sat down, the atmosphere quickly became awkward. Gu Yanta broke into a cold sweat and hastily nudged Lu Zheng. Only then did Lu Zheng react and start making introductions, "Dad, Brother, this is my boyfriend, Gu Yanta. He specially prepared this meal to welcome you."
Gu Yanta was clearly not satisfied with Lu Zheng's introduction. That was it? What's this? It didn't highlight my impressive qualities at all!
Hurriedly, Gu Yanta stood up with a smile. "Hello, Uncle."
Father Lu gave him a once-over before nodding in acknowledgement. "Hello."
Then, Father Lu picked up his chopsticks and simply said, "Let's eat."
The three Lu men picked up their chopsticks in unison and began eating. Gu Yanta wanted to say something to break the silence several times, but when the words reached his lips, he didn't know what to say. He was so anxious that he felt like an ant on a hot pan.
In fact, he didn't realise that the Lu family men were all naturally reserved. Lu Zheng was the same. Thinking back to when he first met Lu Zheng, this guy had been just like this. If he had given up back then because of Lu Zheng's distant attitude, he would never have known how wonderful he truly was. Lu Zheng was the kind of person whose goodness could only be understood by those who truly got close to him.
The meal ended in awkward silence. Father Lu got up to leave and said, "Thank you for the meal, young man. Goodbye."
Lu Cheng smiled from the side. "Xiao Gu, don't take it to heart, that's just how my dad is. We have to leave for Lingzhou tomorrow to visit my uncle, so we won't stay long today. Next time, don't go to so much trouble preparing a meal, just let me know, and I'll arrange everything."
Lu Zheng nodded. Gu Yanta wanted to walk them out, but Lu Zheng stopped him, so he could only bid them farewell politely.
The moment the door closed, Gu Yanta let out a sigh of relief. But when he thought about how awkward the meeting had been, his heart jumped to his throat again. Could it be that the old man doesn't like me and that's why he has this attitude?
Turning around, he saw his precious Lu Zheng acting as if nothing had happened, casually tidying up the dishes. Unable to hold back, he went over and asked, "Did I do something wrong? Why do I feel like your dad wasn't very pleased?"
"Huh? Not at all!" Lu Zheng replied as he continued tidying up. "Didn't I already warn you? That's just how my dad is. I hope you won't be scared off!"
"There's no way I'd be scared off!" Gu Yanta said. "It's just that if I've done something wrong and made things difficult for you, I'd feel bad about it..."
"This is just how he normally is..." Lu Zheng explained. "If he ever acts overly warm towards someone, it means he's keeping his distance. Like in business, he's always smooth and polite, but maybe because he's spent so many years navigating the business world, he prefers to keep things distant even at home, it's probably less exhausting for him. The fact that he treated you the same way he treats us means he already sees you as family."
Gu Yanta finally felt at ease and let out a long sigh. "That's a relief..."
"Pfft..." Lu Zheng couldn't help but laugh. "What's this? I didn't realise you were so nervous earlier. Weren't you always saying you've got thick skin and that nothing could shake you?"
"That's what I said..." Gu Yanta looked troubled. "But I still want to leave a good impression on your family..."
"Don't worry!" Lu Zheng patted his chest confidently. "I talked to them about it beforehand. The fact that my dad was willing to meet you means he's already come to terms with everything."
"Mm..." Gu Yanta nodded, then suddenly changed the subject. "I've noticed you've changed."
"Huh?" Lu Zheng was busy loading the dishes into the dishwasher and didn't catch Gu Yanta's meaning right away. "How have I changed?"
"You used to feel just like your dad, but now..." Gu Yanta smirked mischievously. "Could it be that my gentleness has melted your heart?"
"Yes yes yes..." For once, Lu Zheng retorted. "With a wife like you, what more could I ask for?"
"So we're starting this again, huh?" Gu Yanta huffed. "How about I remind you of reality in a bit?"
"Come on! Who's afraid of who?" Lu Zheng's defiant voice rang from the kitchen.
In a flash, Gu Yanta dashed in, scooped him up in his arms, and carried him off. "Now that we've had our fill, it's time to work off the meal!"
"You... Put me down!" Even though Lu Zheng protested, his face instantly flushed red, all the way to the tips of his ears.
The two of them went into the bedroom, laughing and teasing as they went...
The early autumn dusk always arrived quickly. The shadows of distant buildings gradually blended into the deepening night, then were soon cast in a silvery-grey glow by the moonlight, slowly fading into the darkness. The swaying moonbeams painted waves of soft, romantic hues, sketching their inseparable silhouettes upon the curtains...
