The Same Fate Awaits All Sins Chapter 59

Mind Control – 15

Because the case involving Dong Peng was classified as organised crime, involving a large number of people and covering a wide area, and especially given the risk of unexpected incidents like the one that occurred during Zheng Yandong's transfer, the police conducted Dong Peng's arrest in secret.

Unaware that the police had already gathered evidence of his crimes, Dong Peng was at a KTV lounge on the night of his arrest, celebrating his mistress's birthday. When he stepped out to use the restroom, the police apprehended him in secret. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered a large number of communication devices and a significant amount of cash with no clear source, providing substantial material evidence.

After his arrest, faced with overwhelming physical and testimonial evidence, Dong Peng quickly confessed in an attempt to secure a lighter sentence.

Thus, the underground human organ trafficking ring that had been operating for several years was finally dismantled. Using Dong Peng as a lead, the police were able to trace the entire organisation and take down the entire criminal network. The group was structured in a strict hierarchical system, with the key figure being "Boss" whom Dong Peng referred to. Below Boss were clearly assigned roles; Dong Peng himself was responsible for the distribution channels, effectively acting as a sales agent. He belonged to the management tier of the agents, overseeing several lower-level operatives. Above Dong Peng were those responsible for securing the "supplies," including individuals who had coerced Zheng Yandong and later helped him escape. The investigation implicated more than twenty individuals, including five highly skilled doctors from top-tier hospitals who had been coerced or enticed into assisting with the crimes. The number of victims reached twenty-two, the majority of whom suffered from depression, along with a few who had other mental illnesses. The total illegal proceeds from the crimes amounted to more than thirty million yuan. The severity of the offences and the brutality of the methods were truly shocking. Of course, a strict legal trial awaited the perpetrators.

Despite the serious nature of Zheng Yandong's crimes, considering he had been coerced into participating, his sentence was expected to be reduced accordingly.

As for Li Qing, his purchase of human organs, regardless of his reasons, was also a violation of criminal law. He theoretically faced a fine and up to five years of imprisonment, and he expressed his willingness to accept any legal consequences.

The shocking nature of the case and its widespread impact triggered an uproar online. While netizens were horrified, they also mourned the victims who had lost their lives. The case further sparked widespread discussions on depression, leading to a deeper understanding and recognition of the condition.

Particularly tragic was the case of Sun Chao, a teenager who should have been enjoying the prime of his youth. Due to improper parenting methods and neglect of his physical and mental well-being, his illness was neither taken seriously nor understood by his family. Ultimately, he became a target of the criminals and lost his young life, a fate that was deeply heartbreaking and thought-provoking.

End of Part Four

———

"Recently, the police in our city have cracked a major case involving the illegal deception and trafficking of human organs, dismantling the criminal organisation and arresting more than twenty suspects. In this case..."

The news report on television was broadcasting details of the appalling case when Gu Yanta snatched the remote control from Lu Zheng's hand and switched off the TV with a sharp click.

"What was that for?" Lu Zheng pouted in dissatisfaction and reached out to take the remote back.

"You still want to watch?" Gu Yanta quickly hid the remote behind his back. "I've practically gone bald working on this case. I finally have two days off, and I don't want to hear another word about it! Why do I feel like you're actually enjoying this? How about I approve some overtime for you, you can go back to the station and guard the place for another forty-eight hours?"

"I..." Lu Zheng obediently withdrew his hand, crossing his arms over his chest with a huff. "I've been sleeping at home all day, can't I at least watch some TV?"

"I never said you couldn't." Gu Yanta softened a little. "But could you please not watch Channel 12? We spend all day at work dealing with criminals and watch crime documentaries at home too, I'd like a bit of sunshine in my life!"

"Fine," Lu Zheng got up. "Then let's go grocery shopping! Didn't you promise to cook a full spread of your signature dishes?"

"Sounds good!" Gu Yanta had been itching to go out, but Lu Zheng had been so exhausted that he'd slept the entire day. Now that it was almost evening, they finally got ready to head out.

The setting sun cast golden-red hues across the western sky, painting a sea of colours in the evening glow.

Lu Zheng trailed lazily behind Gu Yanta, yawning as he walked.

"Still not fully awake?" Gu Yanta playfully flicked Lu Zheng's nose. "Lazybones! You've slept the whole day!"

"Mmm... I always sleep especially well when I'm with you..." Lu Zheng smiled faintly, his face appearing to be gilded with a layer of gold under the setting sun, making even the fiery sky lose its brilliance.

Gu Yanta, who always found himself struck by Lu Zheng's smile, found his throat felt dry, and he had the overwhelming urge to pull him close and savour him right there and then.

But with pedestrians coming and going at the entrance of their apartment complex, he had no choice but to suppress his impulses and march stiffly towards the supermarket, silently thanking himself for wearing dark-coloured trousers today!

When the two arrived at the supermarket entrance, Gu Yanta grabbed a shopping cart while Lu Zheng continued to dawdle behind him at a leisurely pace.

As they strolled through the aisles, exchanging flirty banter, their striking looks inevitably drew attention. From elderly ladies in their eighties to teenage girls, shoppers couldn't help but steal glances at them.

Gu Yanta picked out a fine cut of Angus veal and some lively South American white shrimp. Then, just as he spotted an Australian blue lobster and was about to check the price, Lu Zheng had already signalled to the supermarket staff to pack one up.

"The person cooking my favourite dishes should prioritise quality ingredients." Lu Zheng pointed to his bag. "Don't worry, I brought the black sub!"

"Black sub? What's that?" Gu Yanta hesitated when he saw the price.

"The supplementary card for my black card!" Lu Zheng pushed the shopping cart forward before Gu Yanta could change his mind.

By the time they finally finished their big shopping trip, hauled everything back home, and stuffed the fridge to the brim, the sky had already turned completely dark.

"Can we skip cooking tonight?" Lu Zheng glanced out the window. "It's late, and it's already dark, how about we just grab a midnight snack instead?"

"Alright." Gu Yanta had been planning to show off his skills, but there wasn't enough time tonight. By the time he finished cooking, Lu Zheng would probably be starving. "What do you want to eat?"

"Grilled skewers and beer, of course!"

The two headed out again and found a barbecue stall by the entrance of a small restaurant. As soon as they sat down, the owner attentively handed them the menu. Without hesitation, Lu Zheng ordered two hundred yuan's worth of skewers and beer in just a few swift moves.

"Wow!" Gu Yanta clicked his tongue in surprise. "You're usually so picky with food, but when it comes to skewers, you go all in!"

"Who said I'm picky?" Lu Zheng shot Gu Yanta a glare before turning to the stall owner. "I'll have a plate of stir-fried chicken feet too, just not too spicy."

"Look, you don't eat mutton, you don't eat organ meats, if that's not picky, what is?" Gu Yanta counted them off on his fingers.

"I only avoid those two things, alright?" Lu Zheng retorted with exasperation.

Before long, Lu Zheng's order was ready, and the stall owner kept reminding them to enjoy their meal, afraid of neglecting such a generous customer.

With a crisp pop, Gu Yanta bit the cap off a beer bottle, poured a glass for Lu Zheng, filled one for himself, and downed it in one go. The refreshing cold beer rushed down his throat, instantly washing away the lingering heat and boredom of late summer.

Lu Zheng eyed him warily. "You... you... don't drink too much!"

"Don't worry, haha!" Gu Yanta set down his glass. "I'm only having this one. I've got important things to do when we get home, I can't afford to get drunk!"

Catching the implication in his words, Lu Zheng's face tinged with red as he shot him a glare. "I knew you didn't have good intentions!"

"Hahaha, what are you thinking, Lu Xiaozheng?" Gu Yanta couldn't help but laugh when he saw Lu Zheng's reaction. "I meant I have a gaming session with Chen Chen and Yu Tiantian later. They're counting on me, their almighty leader, to carry them to victory!"

"You? Almighty leader?" Realising he had misunderstood, Lu Zheng tried to save face. "Clearly, I'm the real leader here!"

"Alright, alright..." Gu Yanta chuckled. "Why don't we just not play with them, it's too much of a waste of time... It's better for us to do something meaningful!"

"Go, go, go..." Lu Zheng was utterly speechless at Gu Yanta's shamelessness. Although he himself had also developed a taste for it, he still found it too embarrassing to admit openly.

Not wanting to continue this topic, Lu Zheng quickly changed the subject. "By the way, I mentioned this to you a few days ago, my dad and my brother are coming back to China. I'll confirm the details later, but it'll probably be in the next couple of days, so prepare yourself."

"What do I need to prepare for?" Gu Yanta declared boldly. "I'll pat my chest and promise our dad that your lifelong happiness is in my hands!"

"......" Lu Zheng was at a loss for words. "My dad might seem a bit distant at first, remember not to let him scare you."

"Tch~" Gu Yanta curled his lips. "You're underestimating your husband too much! Don't worry! I'll definitely show off my top-notch cooking skills, sweet-talk him, and win over both our dad and our brother! By the way, how long is our dad staying this time?"

"I'm not sure, but it might be for a while. Since my cousin's incident, my uncle hasn't been in the best state, Dad's likely coming back to discuss the company merger with him."

"Speaking of your cousin's case..." Gu Yanta frowned. "There's still no lead on Huang Chufeng's death. Thinking about it, I feel quite ashamed. If our dad asks about it..."

"You think my dad has the same low emotional intelligence as you?" Lu Zheng shot back. "How could he possibly bring that up when meeting his future daughter-in-law?"

"D-Daughter-in-law..." Gu Yanta nearly spat out his soda. "Lu Xiaozheng, have a conscience, I'm called son-in-law now!"

"Fine, call it whatever you want, the meaning's the same anyway!" Lu Zheng continued, "There are still unanswered questions in my cousin's case. After that incident, the drug dealers in Yuchuan were indeed affected, but they're like rats in a filthy gutter, they can't be killed off or driven away, and they just keep coming back..."

"Exactly! The key is to root them out completely." Gu Yanta nodded, the night casting a mysterious and solemn glow on his sharp features. "I have a hunch. When Old Jiang went to Xia County, he took over from our senior, who had been in the anti-narcotics unit for years and was killed in retaliation by drug dealers. The methods used were identical to what happened with Huang Chufeng. I can't shake the feeling that these two cases are connected!"

"I feel the same." Lu Zheng downed the last of his beer. "In a couple of days, I'll go with you to Xia County!"
