The Same Fate Awaits All Sins Chapter 74

Final Part – 15

Xu Jia knew he was in serious trouble this time. Initially, he hadn't taken the people from Yuchuan seriously at all, thinking that a few outsiders, unfamiliar with the local situation, couldn't possibly stir up any trouble.

He hadn't expected that on their very first day, they would encourage that incompetent new captain to suspend him. He had been too careless. He had assumed they were merely following orders from their superiors to conduct a routine inspection and supervise, but he hadn't anticipated that they would actually investigate this matter so deeply.

If anyone was to blame, it had to be Mu Jie. When Ma Xiangrong could no longer stay in Yuchuan and returned, he had lost his composure, fixating on getting rid of him. As luck would have it, he had chosen this critical moment to act, not even consulting Xu Jia before orchestrating the gas station incident. That had handed the police the perfect lead when they had been grasping at straws. In reality, Ma Xiangrong was nothing more than a doomed man, a grasshopper after autumn, unable to jump for much longer, there had been no need to rush things. He only brought disaster upon himself.

The thought of this made Xu Jia seethe with rage. Over the years, he had reaped countless benefits from Mu Jie, establishing a deep relationship of mutual interests and trust. He had originally planned to continue for a few more years before withdrawing, resigning, and settling in some scenic little country in Southeast Asia to invest in business ventures. But now, this mess has happened...

Seeing that Chang Le was growing more and more suspicious of him, Xu Jia was starting to panic. He had to warn Mu Jie to escape! If this continued, the police would inevitably follow the trail and catch Mu Jie. And once Mu Jie was arrested, he would undoubtedly implicate Xu Jia.

Ever since his suspension, Chang Le had assigned people to keep him under surveillance. He didn't dare make any rash moves. Xu Jia knew that his communication devices were already under Chang Le's control. The moment he made a call, the police would immediately lock onto the recipient's location. Gritting his teeth and stomping his foot, Xu Jia made up his mind, he would seize the opportunity to shake off his tail and personally drive to warn Mu Jie.

He knew the risks of doing this were enormous, but rather than sitting on the sidelines, he might as well take a risk for once! Xu Jia sped west along the G3009 national highway, racing towards the cargo dock.

This was Mu Jie's lair. Even if he was really being followed and ultimately failed to escape, the one who would suffer the most would still be Mu Jie. Meanwhile, Xu Jia could still maintain the image of an outstanding officer secretly investigating drug traffickers and uncovering their base of operations. Even if Mu Jie turned on him, he could claim that he had merely been infiltrating the drug ring under false pretences. The dirty money had already been thoroughly laundered. Ideally, he would find the right opportunity to kill Mu Jie and be done with it, eliminating all evidence once and for all. Xu Jia touched the gun hidden beneath his clothes, drawing a bit of comfort from its presence.

A silver Subaru SUV pulled up in front of a villa, Mu Jie's residence. It looked like a regular neighbourhood, but no one knew that beneath it lay a hidden drug production facility, built painstakingly over the years by Ma Xiangrong. Every year, tens of thousands of doses of narcotics flowed from this seemingly insignificant location to destinations across the country.

Xu Jia rang the doorbell at the gate. A bodyguard opened the door for him, and as he stepped inside, he saw Mu Jie trimming the flowers and shrubs in the courtyard. Mu Jie showed no sign of surprise at his uninvited arrival.

Mu Jie was a middle-aged man in his forties, not particularly tall, but exuding an undeniable presence. Years of navigating the underworld had given him the natural atmosphere of a gangster, the kind that made people not dare to stare at him.

"Why are you here?" Mu Jie glared at his long-time accomplice, struggling to suppress his anger. Lowering his voice, he said, "Didn't I say you weren't allowed to come here? What if the cops are watching you?"

"You still have the fucking nerve to talk?" Xu Jia's eyes burned with rage as he pointed a finger at Mu Jie's nose and roared, "If it weren't for that mess you made at the gas station, they'd still be dancing to our tune! Enough with the bullshit, get moving!"

"What's going on? I was wondering why I couldn't contact you recently, has the situation really gotten this serious?" Mu Jie put down the gardening shears in his hand and surprisingly took a seat calmly.

"I'm already under their control, I have to run today!" Xu Jia was furious at Mu Jie's unhurried attitude. "You just couldn't hold your damn nerve and had to stir up all that trouble, and now that thug you hired has been caught! What the hell are you still dawdling around for? Don't drag me down with you if you get shot!"

"When you were working for me, did you ever think about whether I'd drag you down?" Mu Jie barely acknowledged Xu Jia, his voice laced with menace. "So what if they followed you? Worst case, we all go down together!"

"What do you mean?" Xu Jia took a startled step back as he caught the sinister gleam in Mu Jie's eyes. "What the hell do you want to do?"

"Ma Xiangrong won't let me go, and neither will the cops." A cruel glint flickered across Mu Jie's gaze. "It's fine for me to die, but the factory and those cops will be buried with me!"

"Are you insane?" Xu Jia stared at Mu Jie incredulously. In his eyes, Mu Jie had always been nothing more than a drug dealer who only cared about money. He never imagined Mu Jie would have the audacity to go this far, he didn't think Mu Jie would choose to destroy everything rather than take his chance at escaping.

"You think I don't know what you're up to?" Mu Jie slammed his fist onto the table so hard that the mahogany surface made a loud bang. "You just want to run if you can, and if you can't, you'll kill me and hand the factory over to the cops! Maybe you're even hoping for a promotion and a fat pay rise, huh? Xu Jia! You think I've been working all these years for nothing? All the favours I've given you over the years, might as well have fed them to a dog! I should've seen it from the start, you're just a treacherous wolf that can never be tamed!"

"Mu Jie! Calm down a little! Listen to me! Arrange a boat right now, let's go to the cargo dock!" Xu Jia was so nervous that sweat dripped down his face as he clenched his fists tightly. "Staying alive is the most important thing!"

Just then, one of Mu Jie's men rushed in anxiously, "Boss!"

He leaned in and whispered something hurriedly in Mu Jie's ear, and Mu Jie's expression changed as he listened.

It's over! Xu Jia thought to himself. Instinctively, his hand moved toward his gun. Xu Jia understood that Mu Jie had already made up his mind to kill him, so he had to strike first. But Xu Jia was a second too slow. Before he could react, the cold, black muzzle of a gun was already aimed straight at his forehead.

"It's too late Xu Jia! The cops are already coming after us! Rather than letting a petty person like you succeed, I might as well wait for the cops to come and catch me. But they won't gain anything. All I have to do is press a button, and everyone will be buried with me!" Mu Jie's eyes were bloodshot, like a devil from hell.

With the bang of a gunshot, a bullet tore through the centre of Xu Jia's forehead. His eyes widened in disbelief as he fell backwards, lifeless.

Mu Jie glanced at the faint wisp of smoke rising from the muzzle of his gun, wiped the muzzle clean, then turned to his men, "Get rid of it."

Two bodyguards rushed forward to drag Xu Jia's corpse out of the courtyard.

Mu Jie's eyes were bloodshot. He looked up at the horizon, where dark clouds loomed, signalling that a great battle was about to begin...
