The Same Fate Awaits All Sins Chapter 46

Mind Control – 02

The scorching afternoon sun had baked the car's surface until it was scalding hot. Inside, it was like a steamer, and the moment the door opened, the heat hit their faces.

"It's already September, why is it still this hot?" Yu Tiantian wiped the sweat streaming down her face while driving.

"Ai, the weather really is strange this year." Chen Chen was also drenched in sweat. He glanced at Lu Zheng sitting beside him, who appeared completely unaffected, and curiously asked, "Consultant Lu, aren't you hot? I don't see you sweating at all."

"I'm hot too, but I just don't sweat much," Lu Zheng replied. "Probably just my constitution."

"Ai! See, that's the difference between an earthly deity and us mere mortals! Immortals survive on dew." Chen Chen cast another glance at the "well-built" figure in the front seat. "Yu Tiantian! Look at you! You can eat an entire pound of steak! Do you even qualify as a girl?"

"Fuck! What's wrong with me? Why is everyone targeting me today?!" Yu Tiantian fumed. "What have I done to deserve this?!"

Before Chen Chen could retort, his phone rang in his pocket.

"Boss? Bet he's calling to rush us." Chen Chen muttered before answering. "Hey! Boss! Don't worry, we're just a few minutes away!"

"Where's your Consultant Lu?"

"What? You're always talking about Consultant Lu, it's barely been an hour since we've been apart! Boss, can you be considerate towards us poor single dogs and stop spreading dog food in front of us? Thanks in advance!"

"Be serious."

"Consultant Lu is right beside me, what's up?"

"Ah... nothing... I just want to tell you not to come to my place any more, turn around and head to Ren'ai Hospital, we've got a case."

"Damn... We've only had a day and a half of rest..."

"Enough, no more nonsense, I'll be waiting for you here."

"What's going on?" Lu Zheng asked, noticing the dejected look on Chen Chen's face after he hung up.

"Don't ask. Yu Tiantian, turn around! We're heading to Ren'ai Hospital!"

"Ai~~~" Yu Tiantian let out a long sigh, turned the wheel, and made a U-turn towards the hospital.

As soon as the car pulled into Ren'ai Hospital's entrance, they saw a large crowd surrounding the emergency centre's doors, completely blocking the way. The sharp wail of police sirens mixed with the clamour of the crowd, creating a scene of utter chaos.

Several officers from the local police station were struggling to maintain order. In the crowd, some were dressed in mourning attire, some were wailing uncontrollably, and others were shouting in fury.

"Let us in!!!"

"Ren'ai Hospital has no regard for human life!!! Give my son back his life!!!"

"Yes! You must give us an explanation!!!"

Chen Chen, a self-proclaimed gentleman, had never seen such a scene before. "What's going on? A large-scale medical dispute?"

"No idea, how do we even get in in this situation?" Lu Zheng looked at the layers of agitated family members surrounding the entrance.

"I've got this!" Yu Tiantian declared before shouting, "Make way! We're reporters from Evening News! We need to get inside and understand the situation! Families! We will definitely do you justice!"

A middle-aged woman, hearing Yu Tiantian's words, suddenly rushed over and fell to her knees beside her, sobbing, "Reporter! I beg you! You must report this matter truthfully! My son can't just die in vain! Wuwuwu..."

"Don't worry!" Yu Tiantian helped the woman up and then raised her voice. "Please, let us through!"

The crowd parted down the middle, and with Yu Tiantian leading the way, the three of them finally managed to break through and enter the emergency centre's lobby.

As soon as they stepped inside, they spotted Gu Yanta standing at the far end of the corridor, his expression grim as he waited outside the doctor's office. Seeing the three of them enter, he gestured for them to come over.

Inside the office sat a dishevelled young doctor, his head hanging in dejection. It was clear he had just been in a physical altercation, his white coat was covered in dust, the sleeve was completely torn apart, and one of his shoes had gone missing, replaced by a slipper. When he looked up at them, it was enough to leave an impression. The doctor had striking features, defined contours, and delicate brows, his handsome appearance undiminished despite his current state.

Chen Chen immediately recognised him. Isn't this Boss's ex-boyfriend? Yu Tiantian and Consultant Lu joined later, so they definitely wouldn't know, but this was Doctor Cheng, who had once been inseparable from Boss for years! His mind spun quickly, What now? The new flame and the old love, gathered in one place, Boss is not in a good situation! Should I pretend not to know?

Before Chen Chen could figure out a plan, Lu Zheng spoke first. "Hello, Dr. Cheng. I'm Lu Zheng, a consultant with the municipal police's criminal investigation team, we met last time."

Chen Chen was stunned. Damn! Consultant Lu is this well-informed? Wait, they'd already met? In what capacity? Did they just say hello? Or had Dr. Cheng been lurking around trying to rekindle things with Boss, only to be caught in the act by Consultant Lu?

"Hello, Consultant Lu," Cheng Yu spoke in embarrassment. "Look at my appearance today, I must look ridiculous."

"There's nothing ridiculous about it, everyone runs into trouble from time to time," Gu Yanta added loudly from the side.

Boss!!! Chen Chen almost wanted to kick Gu Yanta, who had zero emotional intelligence, awake on the spot. If you'd kept quiet at a time like this, no one would mistake you for a mute!

Chen Chen snuck a glance at Lu Zheng, who remained as composed as ever, without even a ripple in his expression. Chen Chen let out a quiet sigh of relief, Consultant Lu probably didn't know about Dr. Cheng's past with Boss yet. He must have assumed they were just ordinary friends.

"You can explain the situation now, Cheng Yu," Gu Yanta said.

Cheng Yu nodded. "To be honest, our hospital does bear some responsibility for this incident..."

On the afternoon of September third, Ren'ai Hospital's emergency centre admitted three patients in a deep coma due to attempted suicide by overdose on sleeping pills. All three were still showing signs of life upon admission. One, whose condition was relatively mild, was stabilised after emergency treatment and had largely escaped life-threatening danger. However, none of them were able to breathe independently and had to be placed on ventilators.

The three patients were a middle-aged woman in her fifties, a sixteen-year-old male high school student, and a thirty-something female office worker. They had no connection to one another. Each had attempted suicide at home and were discovered by their respective families before being rushed to the hospital for resuscitation.

Ren'ai Hospital was one of the few large-scale tertiary hospitals in Yuchuan City, receiving thousands of patients daily. Cases of attempted suicide were not uncommon, so no one thought to link these three individuals together. They were assigned beds according to their order of admission, and by coincidence, their beds were placed next to each other.

The night they checked in, something strange happened...

The hospital's intensive care unit was separated from the nurses' station by glass doors. Any unusual movement from a patient or irregularities detected by the medical equipment would immediately alert the nurses and doctors on duty to take appropriate action.

The emergency centre's nurses conducted ward rounds every two hours. According to the two nurses on duty that night, at around four a.m., they had just finished checking the intensive care unit and returned to the nurses' station when they heard a faint, crackling electrical noise. Moments later, the power went out for a few seconds before coming back on. Normally, power outages weren't supposed to happen in the intensive care unit, but because the two nurses were relatively new and lacked experience, they didn't take it too seriously. Besides, when they checked the equipment immediately after the power was restored, everything appeared normal. They assumed nothing dangerous could have occurred in such a short span and dismissed the matter.

That brief moment of negligence led to a grave mistake! The next morning, Cheng Yu, the doctor on duty, was doing rounds before his shift change, only to discover that all three patients had stopped breathing. The ventilators beside them had ceased functioning long ago, yet the malfunction indicators had never lit up.

Cheng Yu immediately reported the situation to the hospital administration. Strangely, despite the hospital's strict surveillance system, no suspicious individuals were caught on camera that night. With no other explanation, the deaths were classified as a medical accident. However, the families of the deceased refused to accept this conclusion, leading to the current scene.

"If I were one of the families of the deceased, I wouldn't accept it either. They were clearly fine when they were admitted yesterday, how could they just be gone overnight?" Yu Tiantian said after listening.

"The hospital has already agreed to provide compensation, but the families keep insisting on an autopsy, there was no other choice but to call the police," Cheng Yu shook his head with a bitter smile. "Since I was the doctor on duty that night, I had to come forward and explain. The families were furious, and that's how I ended up like this..."

"The number of deaths is a bit high for the local police station to handle, so Old Liu called me over," Gu Yanta explained.

"Then do the autopsy! Since the families are requesting it, we have to give them an explanation," Chen Chen said.

"Mhmm." Lu Zheng frowned. "I'm afraid this matter is not as simple as a medical accident, we need to investigate further. Why would three unrelated people attempt suicide at the same time? And why would they all die from so-called medical accidents at the same time? What are the odds of that? Is this really just a coincidence?"

"Consultant Lu is right," Gu Yanta nodded. He then turned to Cheng Yu, who was at the side, "Take care of yourself these next few days. Doctor-patient relationships are intense right now, if you keep putting yourself out there, those families will eat you alive!"

Cheng Yu looked at Gu Yanta gratefully and nodded. "I know, I'll be careful."

What kind of scene was this? Boss is acting so warm and affectionate toward his ex right in front of his current partner! Even if Consultant Lu didn't know about their past relationship, wouldn't he at least start getting suspicious? Chen Chen couldn't sit still any longer, he quickly nudged Gu Yanta.

Gu Yanta was completely oblivious and continued to talk to him, asking about the details of the case.

Chen Chen was breaking into a cold sweat for Gu Yanta!
