Qiming Chapter 65

Chapter 65

The moon is like a curved blade, the stars resemble the light on a lake.

In the city, you couldn't see the starlight, only countless lights. These lights reflected in the distant lake, becoming a cheap version of starlight.

"What's wrong with you? Why are you so down?" Ever since he received that notification, Xu Chengyue had been preoccupied. Gu Yunfeng didn't like guessing games, so he unlocked his phone screen, opened the message, and asked Xu Chengyue, "Is it because of this?"

Looking at the message reminding him that he could check his medical report tomorrow, Xu Chengyue didn't answer. Instead, he bent down slightly, resting his forehead against Gu Yunfeng's. Their noses were very close, only a tenth of a centimetre apart.

Gu Yunfeng's breathing became irregular. His left hand accidentally touched Xu Chengyue's, but he gritted his teeth and pretended to be calm, saying, "Are you afraid there might be a problem with the check-up results? It will be fine."

Xu Chengyue had been examined more than a dozen times before, so to him, it should have been no different from breathing, drinking water, or sleeping.

However, because Ying Xizi suspected that the previous examination results had been tampered with, this time the examination was done under Gu Yunfeng's name. But Xu Chengyue wasn't aware of this. His current display of nervousness, fear, and worry seemed inexplicable to Gu Yunfeng.

"If the test reveals I have some strange disease, will you leave me?" Xu Chengyue finally raised his head after a long time, his gaze penetrating through Gu Yunfeng's dark eyes, reaching deep into his heart.

"Aiya, it's not possible, there won't be any strange diseases."

"What if one day, you find out I'm not a normal person?"

Gu Yunfeng was taken aback for a moment, then said without hesitation, "You weren't a normal person to begin with, you're much more elite than an ordinary person like me." He held Xu Chengyue's hand. "If you're worried, I promise not to look at the report, you can decide what to tell me and what not to tell me after you've seen it."

He grabbed Xu Chengyue's hand and placed it on his own shoulder, "Don't think too much about it. Come on, help me take off this T-shirt, it feels uncomfortable not changing into a clean one."

The T-shirt was mixed with the smell of blood, sweat, and various medications. A gust of wind blew, and the strange smell rushed into his nostrils.

What a smelly shirt.

He rubbed his head, smiled gently, and was about to raise his arms when, without warning, Xu Chengyue suddenly pounced on him and wrapped his arms around him tightly.

The next second, they both fell onto the relatively soft hospital bed.

It was an amazing feeling. He gently placed his injured left hand on Xu Chengyue's back, using the other hand to support them so they didn't fall too hard. If it had been someone else, he might have thought it was a sudden attack. But when Xu Chengyue got close, he knew it was just a lovely hug.

"What's wrong?" He gently patted Xu Chengyue's back, his hand hurting a bit.

"Nothing, just a hug." Xu Chengyue rested his face near Gu Yunfeng's ear, breathing lightly.

At that moment, the sky outside the window was dark, and the moon and stars had hidden away. He closed his eyes and realised how beautiful the sound of breathing was. The breathing of a loved one was the most wonderful sound in the world.

They trusted each other, they existed for each other, and they were close to each other.

At that time, neither of them thought that this simple hug in their daily life would become an unattainable luxury in the future, abruptly ending just as everything was beginning.

Gu Yunfeng clenched his right fist and lightly tapped Xu Chengyue's back. "Why don't we just go back home now instead of pretending to be hospitalised?"

"No, you stay here, I just want a hug."

"Oh..." He inexplicably felt a bit dejected. "Just a hug?"

"Mhmm. What else did you have in mind?"

"The doctor could come in at any moment, you know?" As he said this, his arm tightened around Xu Chengyue's back. He propped himself up with his elbow and turned over, pressing Xu Chengyue beneath him.

"Let them come," Xu Chengyue said with a casual smile. Looking at the person in front of him, his strange unease vanished. If he wasn't a normal person, he would make himself normal. No wild storms, no recklessness, he just wanted to hold on like this, simply embracing.

—————

Early in the morning, Xu Chengyue went to school for his classes. Gu Yunfeng rolled over and got up, accidentally hitting his injured hand, which caused a sharp pain that nearly brought tears to his eyes.

He thought it would be better to go home. Staying in the hospital only meant getting infusions and check-ups, which also hindered his work progress. He wondered if he had been too reckless at that moment, charging in to grab the knife and ending up injured.

But since no one died, his decision couldn't have been too wrong. Who knew if a few seconds of hesitation might have led to the suspect doing something even more shocking?

He turned on his phone, went to brush his teeth and wash his face in his pyjamas, and then changed into a dark-coloured shirt. He used to dislike shirts, finding them too formal and uncomfortable, but at this moment, he finally appreciated their value.

If it weren't for Xu Chengyue's help yesterday, he would have had to cut his clothes into pieces with scissors. But with a shirt, he could dress and undress single-handedly, without needing anyone else's help.

After changing his clothes, he prepared to sneak out. Although he was supposed to stay in the hospital, his injury was to his hand, and as long as it remained intact, he didn't see why he had to stay in the ward, where he felt suffocated.

He picked up his phone just as a message came in. Ying Xizi sent several cute greeting emojis, reminding him that today he could check Xu Chengyue's medical report and asking him to send it to her quickly.

After he sent the address and username, about fifteen minutes later, she responded.

Ying Xizi sent a simple message.

– Where are you? I'll come to you.

He was packing his things and hadn't yet looked at the report, so he didn't know what the results were. But since she was coming to see him, he thought there might be a problem.

– At your dad's hospital, in the general surgery ward.

– Who got hurt?

– Me.

– ???? Where are you hurt? Is it serious?

– I'm still alive.

Then he sent a smiley face, and there was no further reply.

About half an hour later, as he was torn between whether to wait for her or just sneak out to the office, he heard the familiar sound of high heels approaching steadily, getting closer and closer.

Ying Xizi burst into the ward, wearing a black dress, clearly having rushed out without picking out her clothes.

"Aren't you supposed to be in the hospital for an injury?" she asked, looking at him dressed and ready to go.

"I am injured," Gu Yunfeng extended his left hand with a pained expression. "I got stabbed in the hand."

"Are you planning to go out in this state?"

"Yes, anyway, it's only my hand that's injured, so it shouldn't be a big deal, right?"

"Stabbed in the hand? A penetrating wound, right?" Ying Xizi glared at him, squatting down to read the description of his injury from the bedside notes. She intended to get a cup of water but couldn't find one, so she grabbed a bottle of milk from the cabinet.

"With an injury like this, you should be hospitalised for ten days to two weeks for observation, not checking out the next day." She sat on the chair, skilfully pulling out his photocopied medical records from the drawer and flipping through them.

"What am I supposed to do here? Lie down or sit around? My legs and feet are fine, and it's not a big deal."

"Suit yourself." Ying Xizi gave him an annoyed look. She always had a bit of a princess attitude, and today she seemed even more irritable. She took out a stack of freshly printed papers from her bag, spread them in front of Gu Yunfeng, and pointed to one. "This is Xu Chengyue's brain CT scan."

Then she found another paper. "This is the MRI."

Ying Xizi looked very angry, so he gently ruffled her hair, telling her not to worry, that her father was very capable and could definitely handle it.

In fact, he hadn't looked at the medical report yet and couldn't imagine what the problem was.

"The brain CT clearly states brainstem damage and edema compressing the nerves," she said, visibly agitated. "I'll assume these issues are from last year's injury not healing properly, but what the hell is this?"

She pointed to the report and read aloud: "There is a very dense, highly calcified area adjacent to the temporal lobe, suspected to be a metallic foreign body and organosilicon, primarily composed of... organosilicon?"

"Organosilicon?"

"Alright, it's not impossible for there to be foreign objects. No one can guarantee that my dad didn't leave something behind during surgery..."

She took a deep breath. "But previous reports deliberately concealed this issue."

Moreover, she couldn't believe Ying Han would make such a mistake.

Gu Yunfeng took the stack of medical reports and found the brain CT report, searching it word by word on the internet.

He read it slowly like this for a long time, so long that Ying Xizi was on the verge of losing her patience, before he looked up at her. "Do you know what are primarily made of organosilicon?"

"What?"

"AI chips."

He said confidently, "I saw them once on Chengyue's computer."

After saying this, he released his clenched fist, only to realise he was covered in a cold sweat.
