S.C.I Mystery Series Volume 2 Chapter 37
Murderer vs Murderer 10 - Visiting the Police Academy
Over the next few days, the SCI team fell into a state of idleness with nothing to do. When Bao Zheng passed by their office, he nodded his head in satisfaction seeing them so idle. It showed that the security of S City is getting better day by day.
Gongsun was not idle like the others; he was so busy
that he didn’t even remember what he was researching.
Ma Xin is capable and clever; what’s rare about her is
that she is courageous. She makes watermelon smoothies in the forensic room and
drinks them with a smile. The forensic room that people originally avoided has
now become even weirder.
Zhao Hu and the others all joked around with Ma Han,
“No wonder you always look so calm, you have already suffered enough at home
growing up.”
Ma Han couldn’t laugh or cry.
Luo Tian stayed in the hospital for three days.
Because of his above average recovery ability, he piqued the interest of many
doctors in the hospital. Luo Tian decided to run away from them and take
Luoyang to escape back to the SCI office.
Zhan Zhao and Jiang Ping posted on forums daily. Apart
from the crowd of people who were following the excitement, no one said that
they had a lion at home; all they said was that they wanted to meet Lisbon.
Bai Yutang couldn’t laugh or cry; the last two nights,
Zhan Zhao had talked in his sleep, hugging Bai Yutang and calling him a little
lion.
After another few days passed, there was still nothing
to do. A group of SCI members began to study old, unsolved cases. However, due
to the growing strength of Ai Hu and the other officers in the police force,
the old cases were almost all solved and many of the remaining ones were
already being investigated by other teams. Bai Yutang wondered if it is
possible that the dream world in a state of peace has come true.
On that Friday, everyone came to work relaxed as
normal. Bai Yutang sat on the sofa and played darts uninterestedly. At that
time, Lu Fang hurried in and said “Xiao Bai, Xiao Zhan, are you busy?”
Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao turned to look at him at the
same time, “Could I still play darts if I was busy?”
“Has your team been idle these days?” Lu Fang asked
with an injured self-esteem and everyone’s expressions darkened. “I have an
event for you guys to participate in.” Lu Fang said with a grin.
Bai Yutang looked at him and asked “What kind of
event? Ribbon-cutting events and press releases are out of the question.”
Lu Fang waved his hands and said “The police academy
started an elite program two years ago. It selected a group of outstanding
sophomores and conducted all-round training that was based off of SCI.”
“Really?” Bai Yutang nodded blankly. Neither him nor
Zhan Zhao went to the police academy, so they don’t understand its education
system.
“They are all in their senior year.” Lu Fang smiled
and said “After a year of hard work, the school is conducting a comprehensive
quality assessment. However, they don’t have any experts…”
Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao looked at each other, “You
want us to do the evaluations?”
“I just want you to act as consultants for the school.
All you need to do is provide some specific opinions and give a few lectures.
Didn’t Xiao Zhen teach lectures before, they should be no problem for him.”
Bai Yutang thought for a while. He looked at Zhan Zhao
and asked, “Cat, are you going?”
Zhan Zhao sat on the sofa with his laptop and kept
typing. He sipped his cold drink and looked at the scorching sun outside the
window, “Won’t go, it’s too hot.”
Bai Yutang shrugged to Lu Fang. Lu Fang continued to
try to convince Zhan Zhao, “I heard that there is an international circus that
is performing near the police academy. They perform every night and their
finale involves animals; in particular, they use lions…”
Before he finished speaking, Zhan Zhao hurriedly
called Zhao Zhen, “Zhao Zhen, bring Lisbon to the police academy tonight for a
blind date!” After hanging up the phone, he spoke to Lu Fang, “The education of
the future officers is our responsibility, right? Let’s go!”
Bai Yutang was speechless.
And so, all of the SCI members packed up and headed
out to the police academy.
As the car drove towards the police academy, Zhan Zhao
kept looking out the window, “Where is the circus?”
In the back seat, Gongsun looked out from the papers
he was holding and said “Twisted melons are not sweet. What if Lisbon looks
down on the others, or the others look down on Lisbon?”
“No way…” Zhan Zhao whispered, “Lisbon is too handsome
to be looked down on…” (Angel: I love Zhan Zhao so much. This made me laugh way
too hard)
Gongsun couldn’t laugh or cry. Bai Yutang asked
curiously, “Gongsun, what have you been studying in the forensic room these few
days?”
“The bones that Wen Moyao found.” Gongsun leaned on
the back of the front seat with interest and continued, “I have concluded that
the bite marks on the bones were not made by a North American coyote, or a
jackal from Indian regions, but rather a large prairie wolf such as the
Siberian or Mongolian prairie wolves. There are not many species of large
prairie wolves left now. The inner-Mongolian grasslands, the Qinghai-Tibet
area, and the northeastern forests are the areas that are still home to these
species.
Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang looked at each other. Bai
Yutang looked at Gongsun in the rear-view mirror and asked “What does this
mean? The bones were somewhere in Asia when they were bitten?”
“Hmm…” Zhan Zhao touched his chin. “If it was an
Indian ceremony, they wouldn’t mistake the favourite species of the gods they
admire. Jackals and prairie wolves are fundamentally different.”
Bai Yutang felt strange and smiled, “They both have a
mouth and four legs. What is so different about them?”
Gongsun and Zhan Zhao curled their lips in annoyance.
Zhan Zhao pointed his finger at Bai Yutang and said “It’s the same as the
difference between you and your brother!”
Bai Yutang was speechless.
Soon, the car stopped at the gate of the police
academy. Bai Yutang and the others got out of the car. Zhan Zhao looked around,
“There is no circus! Lu Fang tricked me?!”
Bai Yutang patted him, “Don’t worry, they will perform
at night. What circus beats their drums during the day? Let’s wait until
night.” After speaking, he grabbed the disappointed cat and entered the police
academy.
Behind them, Bai Chi whispered to Gongsun, “Lisbon is
a male lion and the circus lion is a female. Even if they hit it off, we would
have to wait half a year for the cub to be born. By then, the circus would be
gone. How could they get the cub?”
Gongsun couldn’t help but laugh, “The circus moved
somewhere else yesterday. If it hadn’t, how could any of us tell him about it?”
(Angel: They are
so mean to Zhan Zhao. All he wants is a little lion cub)
Bai Chi blinked and asked, “Why couldn’t you tell him?”
Gongsun spoke mysteriously and authentically, “One
mountain cannot house two tigers. How could one cat raise two Bai’s”
Bai Chi admired him, “Gongsun, you are so literate…
Oh.” Gongsun rewarded him with a sweet chestnut. The little guy failed to learn
and is not as fun as before.
When the group entered the police academy, the
principle came out to greet them. As soon as he saw Bai Yutang walking in the
front, he came up to shake hands with him. “Captain Bai, right? Thank you for
coming today.”
Bai Yutang smiled, “It’s no problem.”
“It’s hot outside, let’s go sit in the office.” The
principle took a few teachers with him and they welcomed the SCI members into
the office.
They served tea and offered candies; one of the
teachers even peeled an orange for Bai Chi and placed it in front of him. “You
are too polite” Bai Chi nodded.
After everyone exchanged greetings, Bai Yutang
introduced all of the members of SCI to the principal.
“Oh… You are Dr. Zhan… Oh, I have been admiring your
name for a long time. I am a fan of your books.” The old principal was shaking
with excitement. “Our school’s behavioural analysis courses and criminal
psychology courses have never been able to find good teachers. Ah, Dr. Zhan,
will you be an honorary teacher?”
Zhan Zhao asked in a puzzled manner, “Do I need to
teach to be an honorary teacher?”
“No need.” The old principal waved his hand with an
earnest expression on his face.
Zhan Zhao tilted his head and looked at him, “Then
what do you want me to do if I’m not teaching?”
“Uh…” The principal opened his mouth and smiled “Dr.
Zhan is good at joking around… Come, let me show you around.”
Zhan Zhao was confused. When the principal left, Lu
Fang leaned over to him and whispered, “People are enrolling just because of
your name.”
Zhan Zhao frowned. He glanced at Bai Yutang and saw
that Bai Yutang shook his head; his impression of the principal had immediately
deteriorated. (Angel: Aw, Bai Yutang doesn’t it when his cat is being used by others)
Everyone followed the principal for a tour of the
school. “Here is the gymnasium.” The principal introduced the school’s
facilities to everyone. “There is the shooting range… That is the library… And
here is the cafeteria…”
The SCI members are quite good at catching thieves and
finding the killers, but when it comes to education, they can only follow the
principal’s lead.
“Because this opportunity is rare, we have posted a
notice in advance saying that the SCI members are coming to the school this
afternoon. All of you are the idols of these students. The auditorium is full
of students who want to see you. Can you answer some questions for them? They
have a lot of things they want to ask you.”
Lu Fang nodded and smiled at the principal, “It’s okay
as long as it is related to police affairs. It’s best not to talk about
anything personal.”
“Alright.” The principal quickly nodded.
Behind him, Bai Yutang and Zhan Zhao looked at each
other — ‘Lu Fang is so greasy’
The group entered the auditorium and the students got
excited. One by one, they craned their necks and looked forward. A few more
farsighted students brought binoculars. Admiring the SCI members, they
exclaimed “Wow, they are all so handsome.”
The principal gave a brief introduction to the
students and explained that they could freely ask questions about police
affairs but that they could not ask anything personal.
The hall is not so much an auditorium, but rather a
large classroom; the students were all crowded inside. The school put a row of
sofas in the front of the room for the SCI members to sit down on. It didn’t
feel like they were teaching, it just felt like a conversation.
Lu Fang sat on the side and pointed to someone to ask
a question.
A boy stood up and asked Bai Yutang “Captain Bai, I
heard that you graduated from the military academy and that you were a pilot.
Why did you want to be a police officer?”
Bai Yutang answered, “I couldn’t find another job.”
The students laughed. Lu Fang called on another
student. A girl stood up and asked Zhan Zhao, “Dr. Zhan, do you hypnotize
people?”
Zhan Zhao looked at Lu Fang — ‘This is a private
matter.’
Lu Fang winked at him — ‘Just answer it.”
Zhan Zhao was helpless; he could only nod his head.
“You are so academically accomplished, is there
anything that you want but that you haven’t gotten yet?” The girl continued.
Zhan Zhao opened his mouth and uttered the word
‘lion’. Next to him, Bai Yutang coughed to cover it, “Uh-huh.” (Angel: (*≧▽≦)οΎο½Ό)) I love this, it’s too funny)
Zhan Zhao swallowed the word ‘lion’ and stared at Lu
Fang — ‘That’s a private matter!’
When Lu Fang looked at the principal, the principal
turned around and said to the students, “Ah, students. Try not to ask personal
questions.”
A gentle boy stood up and asked Bai Chi, “How old are
you Officer Bai Chi?”
Bai Chi was still a little anxious when he saw so many
people; he felt like he was back in school. It was not long ago that he was
still in school and his grades were not good back then. He nervously replied,
“Well, I’m twenty-four.”
“I read your information in the archives room. When
you were in school, your grades were not good. Your athletic ability was the
same. How were you able to join the elite SCI? Is it because Captain Bai is
your cousin?” (Angel: how dare they doubt Chi Chi’s abilities)
Bai Chi blinked and didn’t know how to answer.
Everyone from SCI was equally disgusted by this question. The principal and
some of the students present were a little bit embarrassed.
Zhan Zhao suddenly said to Bai Chi, “Chi Chi, stand up
and face away from the students.”
Bai Chi was a little dazed, but he still followed Zhan
Zhao’s instructions.
Bai Yutang instructed to Bai Chi, “Describe the person
who is sitting in the tenth seat in the third row from the bottom, near the
back door.”
Bai Chi thought for a while and said, “Well, it is a
girl with long hair that was dyed brown. She has a melon seed face and a thin
body. She is wearing white-framed glasses and a T-shirt with a Doraemon
graphic.”
Everyone looked back at the girl and couldn’t help but
gasp. Zhan Zhao smiled and said to the boy who asked the question, “You can
pick another one if you aren’t convinced.”
The boy turned pale. He looked around and said, “Near
the front door, what do the glasses of the third person in the ninth row look
like?
Bai Chi thought for a bit and said “He didn’t wear
glasses. He is a boy with a flat head, who is wearing a white vest, and has a
mole on his neck.”
“Heh…” Everyone gasped again. After a long silence,
the students began to applaud. Zhan Zhao tugged Bai Chi’s hand, indicating that
he could sit down. Bai chi blushed as he returned to his seat.
